We’re back with a dance-only show by Elijah Muñoz:
what the body remembers
‘what the body remembers’ is a 50 min non-narrative exploration of the body; the perceptions, value systems, biases, and inclinations both viewers and performers have on the body; and the relationship the body has with the mind, the self, other bodies, other minds, and other selves.
The show features a cast of 8 dancers as movement-researchers. The dissonance and resolve are palpable as the dancers move in syncopated rhythms with each other. Elijah is fascinated with form, memory, and creating complexity through the most simple of movements. In this piece, the cast explores how units of movement can be lost and found by using choreographic structures, namely counter point, syncopation, and an incredibly detailed and mathematical rearrangement of the dance moves that drive our dancers crazy. Elijah makes his dancers live in a Rubik’s cube. #whatthebodyremembers #whatthebodyforgets
“A brilliant young virtuoso, Elijah Muñoz is one of Fresno’s rare unicorns and emerging dance professionals, dripping with ideas, ingenuity and talent. His work is polished and edited, it is as oozy, luscious, tender and human as it is athletic, syncopated, and complex. He’s a perfect paradox, and it makes me feel alive to see dance expressed this way. The craft of dance making is strong with him, and that is refreshing.”
